PHONOCUT APC-2

welcome to

PHONOCUT

a new kind of music record

Phase 1

A warm invitation to join our mission

PHONOCUT is all about creating a new environment for producing high quality music records. Finally shifting manufacturing outside of industrial mass production factories to small, bespoke ATELIERS where sound can be created, captured and turned into a beautiful physical object at the exact same magic moment. Finally introducing the opportunity to create small edition sizes within minutes/hours instead of weeks/months without huge setup costs. All it takes is our beautiful APC-2 analog PHONOCUT MACHINE, our expanding range of high quality PHONOCUT BLANKS and PACKAGING ELEMENTS, the push of a few buttons, the power of your hands, your vision and creativity.

It might sound ambitious, but since our foundation in 2018, our dream has always been to give birth to all these millions of music records that never had a chance to exist based on traditional production principles.

We're NOT trying to compete with large-scale industrial pressing, injection molding and printing plants. Instead we're passionately opening up and celebrating something very different. PHONOCUT is all about “the other way”. Driven by innovation, accessibility, sustainability, craft, on demand production, quality and creative empowerment.

PHONOCUT development studio

“Here at PHONOCUT we all feel the incredible potential of PHONOCUT to empower and inspire people all over this planet. We currently don't yet know exactly how to make the best out of this breathtaking opportunity and how to scale PHONOCUT to a global level, but our big dream is to do this together with carefully selected people who can imagine things that do not yet exist and are ready to join our network so we can make them happen together.

While radically changing the relationship people have with records, we also respectfully have to introduce the machine slowly to gain experience with the application from the ground up, and to understand how people actually want to use it. How do they envision using it? How can we best support them? How can we move beyond the limitations of the old system?

The PHONOCUT system centered around the APC-2 will continuously reveal all the needed keys to this revolution, and together we will delightfully add another level and a new kind of media to the music industry. Giving back the full power and control to the creatives, the visionaries and the artists.

PHONOCUT is our heartfelt, warm invitation to join our mission.”

Analog PHONOCUT Machine

A professional record cutter built and designed to produce original playback discs with superior sound quality in real time.

Developed and built by our close friends from teenage engineering.

After many years of relentlessly searching all over the planet for the right partner, capable of finally overcoming all the 2.345 impossible challenges you face when building such a machine, we were lucky and maybe stubborn enough to finally convince the very best engineers and product designers of the universe: teenage engineering.

Without them, our PHONOCUT dream would never have succeeded as it really needs incredible superpowers and dedication to develop and build a professional high precision machine powerful, reliable and precise enough to turn our PCH-3 PHONOCUT Cutting Head and our PCA-1 PHONOCUT Cutting Amp into a fully functional, perfectly working record cutting lathe. A machine which we will build hundreds, even thousands of times over the next months, years and decades.

Our big vision is to make the APC-2 available for everyone interested to actively join our mission of passionately crafting high quality PHONOCUT records all over the globe the fastest we can. So far, only a very limited set of five machines has been built. But after intensive testing and successfully cutting the first few thousand PHONOCUT records, we will order the first larger batch of APC-2 machines, available in Q3 2027.

The music record of the future

PHONOCUT records are very different from traditional pressed vinyl records. The fact that we are NOT PRESSING our music records but CUTTING THEM in real time with our APC-2 opens up a whole new universe of possibilities and options compared to the last decades of traditional industrial mass production. Not only for the blank but also for the packaging / cover, as we craft each and every PHONOCUT record piece by piece in real time from just the finest materials.

We spent several years making the very best of this incredible opportunity, with the focused vision of designing and developing the music record of the future. Finally tackling the unacceptable fact that, as of today, the production of records is causing severe damage to our environment. We build a new kind of valuable and tangible music media, perfectly adjusted to the needs and demands of today and tomorrow, and based on the obvious fact that music consumption has changed dramatically over the last few years, driven by the digital revolution.

A revolution which, against all original expectations, has triggered a global comeback for many “outdated” and “obsolete” analog media, like books, instant pictures, notebooks, pens, typewriters and handicrafts.

PHONOCUT records are the perfect answer to the exploding demand for beautifully crafted, highly valuable and deeply authentic physical objects and super fan products.

PC-BLANKS: The record material revolution

We are very proud to start our blank family series with our first generation PB-1 PHONOCUT Blank, developed and produced in close collaboration with our dear partner Parley Future Materials. A clear and bold statement against all existing industry solutions out there, claiming to “solve” all the serious environmental problems of traditional record production.

The PB-1 consists of 95% unaltered recycled Ocean Plastic™ respectfully collected by Parley for the Oceans all over the planet. In order to guarantee superior sound quality, we co-developed a complex procedure to put an ultra-thin cutting layer of specially formulated virgin PET on top of the thick Ocean Plastic core.

The result is a high quality 10" transparent disc with a cutting layer (covered by a removable protection foil) on one side and a backside that we love to screenprint for the highest quality picture disc in music history (as the picture side is separated from the side holding the grooves). But even without a print on the flip side, the PB-1 looks very elegant and classy (in our humble opinion).

Our plan going forward is to constantly expand the options of our PB-Family over the next weeks and months, introducing not only all classic sizes up to 12" and double sided blanks in different color options, but also some special edition formats, like square blanks and a wide range of different material options, including classic lacquer discs alternatives.

PC-PACKAGING: An original piece of art

We grew up at a time when records had a magic touch and buying, collecting, caressing them made us feel like art collectors. The amount of time, energy and creativity invested into the creation of such record covers and special content was mind-blowing and many of these covers are still design icons, presented in museums all over the world.

Today 99% of all vinyl records are delivered within the same standardised cover, made out of the cheapest paper available, digitally printed in huge mass production machines and, as a result, most of them lost their magic touch and smell like a wet newspaper.

Therefore we started the development of our new PHONOCUT packaging from scratch rooted on 5 main principles:

  1. Only use the very best, carefully selected materials.
  2. Focus and find the most environmental friendly solutions for each and every detail.
  3. Offer a revolutionary maximum of creative freedom to the artists.
  4. Develop a modular concept to avoid the explosion of the production cost, even if just producing super small edition sizes starting with one.
  5. Edition can be created, printed and customised with standard home print machines.

Please welcome the PC-SLIDE as our first PHONOCUT standard packaging concept, entirely made from breathtakingly beautiful recycled paper supplied by our partner Gmund Papier from the romantic Tegernsee. Available in a whole range of colors and color combinations.

Expanding universe of passionately crafted records

Together with creatives from all over the world we will passionately celebrate our newest PHONOCUT EDITIONS in this section. Starting with 2 main categories: PHONOCUT Live Editions as well as PHONOCUT Studio Editions:

PC-LIVE EDITIONS: The most authentic records in history

The APC-2 enables us to create high quality music records at the same moment and in the same space in which the sound waves are created. Doing this outside of a highly professional studio setup, including a professional cutting lathe, has never been possible.

PHONOCUT can turn every small, cosy living room—or any other magical and inspiring space—into a PHONOCUT ATELIER within just a few minutes. Starting with our very own Atelier here in Vienna, set up with the finest recording equipment from teenage engineering, as well as our small mobile Atelier setup, we passionately started to create PHONOCUT LIVE EDITIONS, which we will now introduce step by step.

PHONOCUT Atelier Live Edition #1

Celebrating our partnership and friendship with teenage engineering, we invited SHIMMER to our small APC-2 release party on June 5th at our PHONOCUT Atelier in Vienna.

This record is our first officially available LIVE EDITION release, with many more to come.

PC-STUDIO EDITIONS: A new take on the classic approach

The sound waves cut into our STUDIO EDITIONS have been created and captured WITHOUT the presence of an APC-2 in the same space.

That said, we of course always invite the artists to our studio as soon as we start the production process, offering them the greatest possible creative freedom by introducing all our options and including them in all essential decisions regarding sound quality and design. Never before have artists and sound engineers had the opportunity to listen to a test cut the very moment the groove is cut. Never before could artists be an active part of the actual production, adding endless levels of unique customisation.

We are more than proud to present our first official PC-STUDIO EDITION, created with one of our very favourite artists of all time. In fact, she is a true hero to us: please welcome NENA and her new EP, Alles wird gut.

Together with her team and her family, we created a super-limited edition of just 145 pieces here at the PHONOCUT ATELIER in Vienna. This PHONOCUT record sold out at her fan store in just a few hours, but we secured the very last 10 units of this iconic edition for our own brand-new shop.

From instant pictures to instant records

1943

While taking a walk on the beach, Jennifer Land asked her father why she could not look at a photograph immediately after he had taken it.

1947

Edwin Land presented the first Polaroid picture to the world at the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York.

1948

Polaroid sold its first 57 Polaroid cameras at the Jordan Marsh department store in Boston, Massachusetts. These cameras were produced in partnership with the world’s leading camera manufacturer.

THIS DAY CHANGED THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY …

2008

The last Polaroid factory, located in Enschede, the Netherlands, closed down based on the assumption that analog instant pictures were no longer needed in an increasingly digital world offering instant pictures for free.

2008

Florian “Doc” Kaps and his team purchased the last Polaroid factory and started the Impossible Project, rethinking analog technology in a digital world.

2010

The first Impossible instant film, the PX100 Silver Shade, was introduced in New York.

2018

The Impossible Project acquired the Polaroid brand.

2018

While driving to the airport after the opening of Jack White’s new pressing plant in Detroit, Doc asked Luki Obwaller, a young cutting engineer from Tyrol, Austria, why records could not be produced outside industrial pressing plants and whether there might be a chance to develop a small, beautiful machine capable of cutting high-quality records at the very moment sound waves are created.

2019

The first concept of a PHONOCUT Homecut machine was presented on Kickstarter.

2024

All backers were informed that the original concept had failed, and a full refund of all pledges and pre-sales was offered, even though the dream of a professional PHONOCUT machine continued.

2025

The factory in Enschede produced close to 10,000,000 packs of film.

2026

In June 2026, the first fully functional professional analog PHONOCUT machine, the APC-2, was presented at the SUPERSENSE palace in Vienna, cutting the performance of the young Swedish artist Shimmer into a PHONOCUT blank. The APC-2 is designed and produced by teenage engineering, one of the world’s most innovative and visionary consumer electronics brands.

THIS DAY CHANGED THE WORLD OF MUSIC MEDIA …

2027

The first 50 PHONOCUT machines will begin crowd-producing PHONOCUT records at carefully selected PHONOCUT ateliers all over the world.

2035

PHONOCUT ateliers all over the world will produce close to 10,000,000 PHONOCUT records.

Our heartfelt invitation to craft beautiful records together

This goes out to all creative human beings interested in producing PHONOCUT EDITIONS with us. We would be delighted to make even your wildest record dream come true.

No matter if you are a major or independent label, ready to explore the new possibilities of a perfect high-quality superfan product, small edition runs and on-demand production.

No matter if you are “just” a curious human being who wants to preserve—and maybe gift—some sound waves very close to their heart for eternity and beyond by creating a private high-quality record.

Our PHONOCUT elements are waiting for your content.

Become part of the global PHONOCUT Atelier network.

We are actively looking for the best possible people and the best possible spaces all around the world in order to start building a PHONOCUT ATELIER CROWD PRODUCTION network with the first 45 APC-2 machines, which will be ready for action in Q3 2027.

What does CROWD PRODUCTION mean exactly?

In a nutshell: we are dreaming of partners who will respectfully and passionately operate the APC-2 at their spaces all over the world.

We will not only provide the machine, but also educate each partner on how to cut records and supply all the materials and services they need.

In addition to their very own projects, each partner is connected to all other partners. If one partner receives a large order of, for example, 500 editions, they can put this production into the network with all defined production parameters for the cut and packaging. Together, all partners can then produce the 500 pieces.

This approach is comparable to the powerful crowd-production networks connecting thousands of private households with 3D printers.

PHONOCUT Atelier network locations marked on a world map

What is the deal?

We are currently working hard on a whole range of programmes for becoming an active part of this network. One principle is especially important to us: we will also provide an option to become our partner without the obligation to purchase an APC-2.

Who are we looking for?

Kind and curious human beings with a deep love and dedication for music, high-quality records, craft and design.

True visionaries with their hearts in the right place who are ready to work hard in order to change the world together.

People with experience in production and in starting, running and operating a business. People who are not afraid to fail and are ready to learn each and every day.

Partners who surprise or even challenge us with their ideas and concepts for using the APC-2 in the best and most efficient way possible.

People powerful enough to introduce our concept to regions and cultures that never before had the chance to produce high-quality records.

Humans who share our love for MAGIC SPACES and our dream of carefully converting them into PHONOCUT ATELIERS—spaces open to artists and visitors, filled with positive energy and a shared vision.

Help us to scale PHONOCUT

With the support of our dear friends, partners, family members and the world’s very best seed investor, we managed to remain independent from classic VCs and banks.

Now, with the existence of the APC-2—our dream machine come true—the moment has come to scale our business. We are very much aware that we need all the help we can get to really change the world and passionately transcend the industry without compromising our original mission.

If you are interested in joining and investing in PHONOCUT, you are more than welcome to contact Doc directly. We are not just talking about money, but also about any other support you think we might need in order to make this big dream a reality.
